Lenses

In Light on Life, BKS Iyengar says, “Consciousness can be compared to a lens. Its inner surface faces the soul itself, and its outer surface comes into contact with the world. Inevitably a degree of grime attaches itself to that outer surface and obscures our vision. In fact it prevents us from seeing clearly what is outside, and it equally prevents the light of our soul from shining out.”

The practice of polishing with gratitude through the 5 Aspects Prayer and Meditation is designed to clear that grime from the lens of the soul and helps that little light of yours to shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!

Polishing with gratitude:

God that I am, God that I am in:

Thank you for coming forward, and becoming BLISS.

Thank you for deep seated guidance and WISDOM.

Thank you for clarity of INTELECT to choose for my highest and greatest good.

Thank you for beneficial ENERGY that flows into this energetic grid.

Thank you for MANIFESTING abundance and compassion.

Thank you for the blessing of your friendship.

Interfaces

There are five aspects of God that can be thought of as nested layers.  They most outward aspect is physical… this is what we see and feel on a day to day basis. And just beneath the surface of this physical reality is an energetic reality that swirls and flows.  How do these two aspects, or layers, connect to each other? I believe that it is from pure energy that the physical reality is manifested. If you’ve ever studied the law of attraction, you understand that the vibrational quality of your energy field is what brings your reality to you. However, there is a connection the other way as well.  What you do in a physical sense affects your energy. What you do with your body, and how you live in space are physical realm actions that affect the energetic reality. If you choose to drink coffee, alcohol, or water will determine the vibrational qualities of your energy. The pollution or contaminants in that water will also affect your vibrational qualities.  Feng Shui practitioners will tell you that how you arrange your physical surroundings will affect the energy and, in so doing, affects what you further attract into your physical reality.

Between each aspect there is an interface. It is a two-way flow from one aspect to another. Each aspect influencing the next, and being influenced by the previous.

When we experience wholeness, when all five aspects are clear, and our God light shines through, the purest and best of all the aspects becomes apparent. The interfaces between the aspects function at the highest level to bring truth, beauty, and goodness into our life, our mind, our intellect, our energy, and our world.

Aspect Definition

I chose the word “Aspect” deliberately for this purpose as it has  several definitions that work in describing our relationship to God.

Here’s how the Merriam-Webster defines the word Aspect:

Main Entry: as·pect Pronunciation: \ˈas-ˌpekt\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin aspectus, from aspicere to look at, from ad- + specere to look
Date: 14th century
1 a : the position of planets or stars with respect to one another held by astrologers to influence human affairs; also : the apparent position (as conjunction) of a body in the solar system with respect to the sun b : a position facing a particular direction : exposure c : the manner of presentation of a plane to a fluid through which it is moving or to a current
2 a (1) : appearance to the eye or mind (2) : a particular appearance of the face : mien b : a particular status or phase in which something appears or may be regarded
3 archaic : an act of looking : gaze
4 a : the nature of the action of a verb as to its beginning, duration, completion, or repetition and without reference to its position in time b : a set of inflected verb forms that indicate aspect

There’s a lot to work with here! First, the word’s origins mean”to look at more.”  This would indicate that the 5 Aspects of God would be five ways to look at God more… more deeply, more closely, more clearly.

The first definition, “a position” of astrological bodies, or facing a certain direction suggests to me that the Aspects of God are ways of facing, or relating to, God. This works nicely with the presentation of various practices for each of the Aspects. The practices are ways of relating to God.

The second definition, “appearance to the eye or mind” correlates nicely to the aspects being the five “illusions” of separation from God. We appear to be separate beings, separate energies, separate intellects but in God’s reality we are all One. The illusion of separateness appears to our eye or mind.

The third definition, “an act of looking : gaze” reminds me that the Five Aspects are ways in which we look past the illusions to the reality of our union with God.

The fourth definition, “the nature of the action of a verb as to its beginning, duration, completion, or repetition and without reference to its position in time” … well that’s pretty abstract… but it sounds pretty groovy. Time is part of the illusion, after all! If you have a succinct way to explain this one, please comment here!

Practices

On each of the Aspect pages, you’ll (eventually) find a section of practices. Just like a musician has to practice in order to maintain and improve her craft, as spiritual beings, we need to practice daily the art of being human.   Practices are the spiritual maintenance that helps us to live more fully.

  • If you see the Aspects as a series of lenses, then practices are ways to polish those lens so that the light of God shines through more clearly.
  • If you see the Aspects as a series of illusions of separateness from God, then practices are ways to see through those illusions to the reality of oneness with God.
  • If you see the Aspects as clothing that we wear when we experience begin human, then practices are ways to be more human and more alive.
  • If you see the Aspects as ways of knowing God, then practices are ways of knowing God. Nice.

Your practice, and my practice will differ. I need more physical practices because I am a 50-year old woman with arthritis and some historic bad habits.  The “dirt on my physical lens” sometimes gets in my way of seeing God clearly. So this is the area of practice, in this decade, for me.

A younger, healthy person might find that they need to develop their intuition. Their physical lens is shining quite nicely, but they are just discovering the cloudy lens of intuition and need to start wiping away the gunk that prevents God from shining through that lens.

Simply knowing and accessing each Aspect of God in you is the first step. Once you can recognize the Aspects, then you can begin to polish, refine, and clarify the Aspects. The result is a clearer vision of God, a clearer light shining through, a comfort of being closer to God. We all need to be aware of each aspect, and polish them with care.

The 5 Aspects Prayer

The Five Aspects Prayer

Right here, right now: There is a Physical reality. I feel the presence of my body in space and time.

And, just underneath the surface of this reality, is the power that fuels manifestation. It is an Energetic reality that swirls and flows.

Directing this energy is consciousness, a cosmic Intellectual reality that chooses and discriminates.

And, informing this intellect is an Intuition, where deep seated wisdom resides.

At the base of it all, what truly IS, is Bliss. Everything is perfect, just the way it is.

And, the source of all realities is God, is Me. I sit with God. God that I am in, God that I am, I thank you.

Thank you for coming forward, and becoming: Bliss.

Thank you for intuitive guidance and knowing.

Thank you for clarity of intellect to choose for my highest and greatest good.

Thank you for beneficial energies that flow into this energetic grid.

Thank you for manifesting abundance and compassion.

Peace be with me, and with all the world.

The 5 Aspects

What are the 5 Aspects, and what are they 5 aspects of?

I have always believed that certain aspects of our lives are simply illusions, masking a spiritual reality, a mystery. Our true nature, if we were to see it clearly, would be pure Soul and connected with God. Simply put, we are God. God is Us.  The aspects that separate us from experiencing our connection and reality of God-ness are unique to this human experience, and very beautiful. It it God experiencing. That is, without our separateness God would not be able to experience being.

Think about this for a moment: You are God, and you are everything and nothing. Not much to experience there, is there? Well, besides everything I mean. But taking in “everything” at one moment is overwhelming. So overwhelming, in fact, that it seems like nothing.

It’s like going to New York City and trying to experience all of the sites, smells, sounds, and possibilities, all at the same time. It’s difficult to imagine, and impossible to hold on to. Instead, you go to New York, rent a nice hotel room overlooking Central Park, wander down to the village and visit a unique bistro, then head up to the top of the Empire State building for the view, then out to Staten Island for a tour….  You take in the city and its sites one by one. You come to know the subway system, the nightlife, the business world, and the families in the neighborhoods. By experiencing aspects of the city, individually, you can build up an understanding over time. Eventually, after many trips, perhaps after living there for many years or lifetimes, you can say that you know New York City.  However, your experiences are not New York City. Not as a whole. They are only pieces, or illustrations, or aspects of New York City.

The aspects of God are like this. You cannot know God, in entirety, all at once. Well, unless you are God. Which, in essence you are… but more on that later.  Here you are now, as a spiritual being having a human experience of God. How do you come to know God? You can come to know God, like you would come to know NYC: one experience, and one aspect at a time.

There are several ways to think about the 5 Aspects of God:

  • They are five ways of getting to know God.
  • They are five layers of experience of God.
  • They are five illusions of our separateness from God.
  • They are five lens through which to view God.
  • They are five delights that human experience brings to God.

The 5 Aspects are:

  • Physical – The physical reality in which we live, our bodies, our environment, nature.
  • Energetic – The life force that swirls and flows around us.
  • Intellectual – The mind that chooses and discriminates.
  • Intuition – Deep seated knowing and wisdom.
  • Bliss – At the base of it all, is bliss — that which is perfect, just the way it is.

This website is dedicated to exploring the 5 Aspects. This is my personal journey to know God, God experience, and God’s experience of  the 5 Aspects. Please join me in my exploration, comment, and join the discussion.
